Chachi’s love of styling and education developed as he strived to find success as an immigrant in America. Fleeing Cambodia with his mother at four years old, Chachi grew up in Salem, Oregon, where shows and movies inspired him to style his nieces’ hair. And at age 11 it evolved into a venture that included the neighborhood kids’ hair. For his 12th birthday, all he wanted was a haircutting kit. At 17, he enrolled in Salem’s College of Hair and Design. “I was one of those beauty school kids who never went to school,” he says. I would skip school and go to advanced classes and say that I was already licensed.” Chachi took advanced classes because he loved learning. “Anything that deals with hair, I absorb it, I love it, I love it.”
Rhonda believe in the importance of educating new talent. Every Monday, they spend the evening teaching aspiring stylists a gamut of skills, that range from the perfect blowout to the chemistry involved in hair coloring, Together, they created a years worth of classes with what they believe is essential to advance technique and drive new talent to the next level of styling. They additionally offer specialized classes for hair extensions, hair coloring techniques, updos and weddings. “During the classes, we can nitpick them, stop what they’re doing, take the comb away, show them how to do it right, and make them redo it again,” says Rhonda. “Sometimes it can be a little trying on your self-esteem but it really helps.” This is how they learned how to do it from the beginning, but it wasn’t as personalized. Their goal is to get all stylists certified by Redken and become an elite team of styling pros.
